Burlap Canvas Button Art

edit-3669

I had seen some cute button art projects on Pinterest and with friends having babies I thought it was a cute piece of artwork to make to have in their room. Here is how I made mine.

First you want to take your burlap and wrap it over the canvas to determine how much burlap you need. I used two layers of burlap so you couldn’t see the white canvas. You could paint the canvas a complimentary color and then use one layer of burlap so the color shows through if you like. Then use a rotary cutter and a straight edge to smoothly cut your burlap to size. If you don’t have those items you can use scissors but I strongly recommend them as it makes it a lot easier to cut the burlap or any fabric. Then you are going to wrap the burlap around the canvas and begin hot gluing the edges down while holding the burlap tight so it lays flat. Try to keep it so the weave in the burlap is straight on the canvas. If it is crooked it makes you think the letter is crooked and will drive you crazy.

Next take your buttons of varying size and color and lay them out in the desired letter or pattern. It takes awhile to play with them to figure out what looks best so take your time. For letters think of the type of font you want to replicate. Once you have it laid out, begin hot gluing each button down. Then you are done!

Tips:

*Use a hair dryer to blow off the left over hot glue cobwebs

*make sure you have plenty of glue sticks, it takes quite a bit of glue to get the burlap on

*Use a cool hot glue gun (or just be careful) as your fingers are pretty close when you are holding the buttons

*Use common sense and keep this artwork away from young babies and children as the buttons are a choking hazard

*Use both sides of the buttons to create variations

*Use clear ruler/straight edge to make sure the letter is spaced appropriately on your canvas

*Make sure you cut your burlap so there is enough room to wrap it around the edges. As I was hot gluing mine I also realized a staple gun would have made this pretty quick and easy to attach to the canvas.

Please share your canvas art pics! I would love to see what you make!

DIY Garbage Disposal Fresheners

Peterson's Perspective: DIY Garbage Disposal Fresheners

I have been using the plink garbage disposal cleaner but what’s better than something cheaper and better for the environment? So I found a great link telling me how to create these garbage disposal cleaners from Savvy Sugar. The only ingredients you need is:

  • 3/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap
  • 1 lemon

1. Mix together the baking soda and salt.

2. Add the dish soap, stirring it in.

3. Grate the lemon peel and stir into mixture.

4. Squeeze and mix approximately 3 tablespoons of lemon juice.

5. Scoop the mixture into a teaspoon and put onto parchment paper. Keep doing this until you have ran out of the mixture. Allow to dry overnight. The teaspoon was not working very well, so I rolled the mixture into balls.

6. Put the refreshers in a tightly sealed jar or container.

To use: When your sink is smelling funky or you think its time to give it a refresh, run your disposal with water for about a minute, then add the refresher and let the ingredients work its magic!

DIY Girls Gift Exchange

My friends and I had another DIY gift exchange. The rules, you must make it and it must be under $10. You bring the number of gifts for the number of people that will be there, so in the end you get around 8 gifts if there were 8 people there. We did this last year and it was so fun seeing everyone's creativity! If you are looking for some quick inexpensive gifts to make, here’s some inspiration!

1. Vanilla extract

7. Infinity scarf

Sewed an infinity scarf! I’m in love with this!

8. Burlap mason jar candle holder

This is what I made for my friends and I will give you a quick tutorial.

  • Clean out old jar, remove label, and if the expiration date is on the glass use a copper dish scrubber  and hot water to scrub off the numbers
  • Cut burlap to fit around the jar
  • Cut lace to fit around jar on top of burlap
  • Hot glue burlap and lace onto jar, be careful since burlap and lace has an open weave the glue easily comes through and can burn your fingers
  • Cut a piece of twine and tie it around the jar in a bow
  • Put a candle in the jar and you are done!

DIY Ornament Wreath

I got invited to a pinterest party last week and we made the cutest ornament wreaths! The host picked up all the supplies, had delicious drinks and snacks and even an adorable nail polish to take home. We didn't really follow specific instructions on how to make this wreath, we just figured it out and helped one another. You basically start with a foam wreath, remove the hanger type piece from the ornament and sort of dig the ornament top piece into the foam. Then you take hot glue and put it at that location on the wreath and apply the ornament and hold until the glue dries. It gets harder the fuller the wreath gets but you want to have your colors and textures evenly spaced, your ornaments positioned at different angles, and you want to create different layers using different sized ornaments. It was really fun because we had such a variety of ornaments to choose from and everyone created something different. We all agreed that they all looked amazing! It takes some time but it’s really easy to do!

Here are some more photos of my wreath when I was at home.
